Papa John’s founder John Schnatter will step down as CEO next month, after he publicly criticized the NFL leadership over national anthem protests by football players two months ago.
Schnatter will remain chairman but will be replaced as chief executive by COO Steve Ritchie on Jan. 1.
Schnatter had blamed slowing sales growth on the controversy surrounding NFL players kneeling during the national anthem and the NFL’s slow response to the matter. His company is a major sponsor of the NFL.
